Former Finance Minister Arben Malaj has commented on the recent protests in which demonstrators have been demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
According to Malaj, the decision of whether to remain in office or step down ultimately belongs to the Prime Minister himself. However, he argued that any insistence on staying in power is pushing the government closer to an increasingly authoritarian model.
“Whether Rama leaves or not is a decision only he can make. But in my view, every effort to cling to power represents a move toward actions that resemble not only autocracy, but a neo-dictatorial attitude,” Malaj said in an interview with A2.
He added that history has shown that dictators rarely end well and publicly stated that the Prime Minister should withdraw from leading the country.
“It is time for him to step down. He can no longer do anything good for Albania. This climate of social division, the tensions among Albanians, between political sides, and among different groups do not serve the country,” Malaj stated.
