Member of the European Parliament Ilaria Salis, from The Left Group in the European Parliament, who submitted amendments concerning the Zvërnec issue, has stated that Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government is failing to protect the interests of the Albanian people.
Speaking in the European Parliament, the MEP expressed her support for the protesters, who, according to her, have taken to the streets to demonstrate against a government that is not defending the interests of its citizens.
Emphasizing that the protests in Albania represent a struggle for popular sovereignty, she called for Zvërnec not to be sold to what she described as “speculators such as Trump and Kushner.”
She further urged the European Union to closely monitor the developments taking place in Albania.
“Albania is truly a model for Europe this week. Many people have taken to the streets to protest against a government that is not protecting the interests of its citizens.
Albania is not for sale. It must not be sold to speculators such as Trump and Kushner simply because they believe they can buy everything: the land, nature, and democracy.
What we are witnessing is not merely a movement; it is a struggle for popular sovereignty. It is a people reclaiming their rights in the face of the dominant economic logic behind this agenda.
I believe Europe should pay very close attention to what is happening in Albania, because it is something of great importance to the European Union. This is a vibrant people, capable of mobilizing in the name of justice and freedom,” MEP Salis said, among other remarks.
