Renowned Albanian writer Elvira Dones has voiced her support for the mass protests that have been taking place in Tirana for the past 12 days, where thousands of citizens are calling for the government’s resignation and the departure of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
In a lengthy social media post, Dones said she has been following the demonstrations with deep emotion, describing the gatherings of citizens in the streets as a “miracle.”
“I have followed them every night and every morning, overwhelmed by emotions that feel close to an emotional earthquake. I have no wise words to add, as many brilliant writers in Albania and the diaspora have already spoken with clarity and beauty. What I see is the miracle of the crowds in the squares,” she wrote.
Dones also addressed Rama directly, asking, “How does Edi Rama sleep?” She argued that beyond what she described as arrogance, lies, mockery, and accusations of international conspiracies, the prime minister is facing difficulties that he refuses to admit.
The writer recalled that she had supported Rama in 2013, hoping he would bring a different future for Albania, but now considers that support a major mistake.
“Edi Rama, in 2013 we believed in you. I was among many who hoped for a different Albania. Personally, I think it was the biggest mistake I ever made,” she stated.
In the closing part of her message, Dones called on the prime minister to step aside and allow change to take place.
“I invite you now to let the country breathe. Your current strength comes from a weak opposition that suits you. But, Rama, let Albania make other mistakes. You do not have the right to sacrifice Albania for your sick ambition,” the writer concluded.
Her comments have sparked discussion online as the anti-government protests continue to draw attention across Albania and among the Albanian diaspora abroad.
